Before she was a Broadway legend, Fanny Brice was a girl from New York’s Lower East Side who was told she wasn’t pretty enough for the stage. She went anyway.
Inspired by the true story of one of America’s greatest comedic stars, Funny Girl follows Fanny from her first shaky vaudeville audition to headlining the famous Ziegfeld Follies. Along the way she falls for Nick Arnstein, a charming and handsome gambler whose risky ventures put their marriage and her success to the test. It’s a story of talent, ambition, and the price of loving someone with your whole heart.
With music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Bob Merrill, and a book by Isobel Lennart, Funny Girl first opened on Broadway in 1964 and made Barbra Streisand a superstar. The score is packed with classics, including “People,” “I’m the Greatest Star,” and the showstopping “Don’t Rain on My Parade.” The 1968 film version won Streisand an Academy Award, and the show returned to Broadway in a celebrated 2022 revival.
Funny, heartfelt, and full of unforgettable songs, Funny Girl is a timeless tribute to the dreamers who refuse to take no for an answer.
